Although they are often used interchangeably, the terms “College Prep Program” and “College and Career Readiness (#CCR) program” have distinct meanings and purposes.

I’m thrilled to announce the launch of our public sector version of my “College to Career” program.

Changes to the SAT take effect March 9, 2024. Here’s a summary of the changes:

As a former military family (Steve and I have 3 generations of military service on both sides), it is disconcerting to me that military recruitment is at a 30-year low.

One of the best books I’ve read recently, Zero to One, helped me understand why the word “innovation” is so prevalent and peppered throughout most college applications.

Innovation is the best way to beat the competition.

1. Lack of proper planning: Failing to create a solid business plan is a common mistake.
-
When my firstborn was preparing for college, it was a former Asst Director of Admissions at Yale that coached her because it was too difficult for me to coach my own children (as I am very subjective). But it was her own individual perseverance that got her to where she needed to be. I’ve mentored young adults and adults from college to career and I can tell you the number one factor in success is perseverance. You don’t have to be the smartest one in the room, but you do have to be the hardest working. #Grit #DontgiveUp #WomenInBusiness #womanownedbusiness #careerconsultant #Perseverance #collegetocareer

Corporate America is very different than academia. I think that is what makes my perspective different. Usually people have only done one or the other successfully.

I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately from my clients on essay writing, interviewing, etc considering how competitive college acceptances have become.

When my son was 15 I wanted him to learn how to buy and sell stocks on his own by researching companies and following the market. I told him that I would match him every dollar he invested but if he ever pulled the money out he would have to give me back what I put in. As added incentive, I told him he could keep any gains, even off my portion. He agreed. I explained to my husband that this was a life lesson and even if he lost money, I would rather he lose thousands now rather than millions later in life. Learning to take calculated risks is part of being financially intelligent. This was one of the best things I could have done for him. He’s 18 […]

I wrote this years ago on my blog but I thought it was worth reposting considering our current division in our country… When I was 13 years old, I was reading a very ambitious book for my age… I don’t recall the exact name, but it had something to do with the rise of Christianity in Western Civilization. My uncle, a Doctor of Theology, saw me at the kitchen table and immediately walked over and picked the book up from my hands. He turned to the back of the book and began to read about the author. After about five minutes, he handed the book back to me. I asked him what he was looking at and he explained to me the importance of understanding the “perspective” of the person […]

As the fiduciary and trustee for multiple trusts over the last 15 years, I can tell you that this is a very complicated and nuanced area of the law. Be careful before going down this rabbit hole and always consult an estate planning or trust attorney. I’ve had to defend trusts in court and it is not fun, but I have never had a trust pierced or unraveled, so I think I can be helpful to people in this regard. Choosing the right type of trust is important and properly documenting and maintaining it is even more important. Lastly, remember trust laws change from state to state so choose an attorney from the state in which you live. #trusts #entrepreneur #womeninbusiness #collegetocareer #careerconsultant

I’ve always loved to teach. I started my career in higher education as a Career Counselor until being recruited into the corporate world of business. It’s funny how life comes full circle and now my side hustle (hobby) is helping kids prepare for college. I am grateful for the experiences life gave me in business because although I’m somewhat in the same place that I started, I have a lot more wisdom to impart 20 years later. I have a fuller perspective and an expanded ability to teach what I know. If I had only stayed in academia, there’s no way I would know how to start, build, brand, or scale businesses. I would not know how to handle finances, trusts, legal issues, contracts, create organizational structures, trademarks etc. There’s […]

A few wise words from Dr Steven Cyr: The enemy of great is good. What’s funny, is that in medicine we have a saying, “The enemy of good is great.” It’s what a lot of people use to justify not trying to make something better, settling with “good enough”. I never really adopted that motto, and although I know we have to know our limitations, I always push myself to be great. I hope no one aspires to just be good at what they do. I do believe we were all put here on earth with a specific purpose and a specific gift that will allow us to be great- if we aspire to it. If we serve God instead of ourselves and if we work diligently, putting all of […]

I wanted to congratulate Alexa for finally earning her place as a Consultant on our website and with our company, Le CYR Consulting. Alexa has been working with our company doing SAT Prep for high school students for the past year. After having a proven track record of helping students raise their scores, sometimes by as much as 100 points in five sessions, I am making her an official member of our team. I originally started Le CYR Consulting as a way to help aspiring college students and young professionals with their resume building, as well as essay writing and SAT prep. My first career was as a career counselor so this is something that has always been near and dear to my heart, but I also wanted a way […]

“He who jumps into the void owes no explanation to those who stand and watch.” ~Jean-Luc Godard As an entrepreneur, I’ve seen great failure and great success. The greater the risk, the greater the reward …and the reverse is true. Those who stand at the sidelines in judgement and throw stones during your failures, you owe no explanation to. Likewise, you owe them absolutely no explanation when you succeed. Let them watch and wonder. ~LeAnn Cyr Matthew 7:1-3Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. 🙏

For me, the goal is not to leave my kids money, but rather to leave them opportunities… and to make available to them the tools and resources necessary so they can make those opportunities work for them. I would rest easy knowing that they took something that we built and grew it, expanded it or made it better… Or if they were to take the knowledge that they received from growing up in our home and started something from scratch. I would absolutely hate it if any of my kids lived off of the income, if any, that was left to them. To work and to be a productive, contributing member of society, is the most rewarding thing that you can do outside of building a family. Especially if, through […]

Well, it is official, Alexa is a writer for UCLA’s Daily Bruin newspaper. This is her first published article as a freshman in college. The topic is not the most interesting to me, but the writing is superb. I’m completely unbiased of course. Alexa is a political science major and plans to go to law school.

As working moms, we all know that one of the most difficult things to manage is “shape-shifting” all day. One moment we are making important decisions about finances, strategy, or hiring decisions, and then the next we are taking a call from a teacher about behavior issues at school. Then when the evening hits, we have to change gears and switch out again. Homework, after school activities, and making dinner. I think that for me trying to adjust and shift gears all day is probably one of the more difficult things I have to do, at least regularly. I tend to be very mentally preoccupied in spaces where I shouldn’t be… like when I’m watching my son’s basketball game or playing dolls with my daughter. Being an entrepreneur you don’t […]

As an entrepreneur, I thrive on new ideas. If I’m not developing new ideas, I feel stifled and stagnant. If my day consists of the obligatory administrative duties and reacting to things from the outside world, versus creating and thinking through concepts, it actually affects my mood and I can become despondent. I have a rule for myself to try to have one new idea every single day, no matter how big or small. The idea has to involve expanding my businesses or propelling them forward. If I can’t come up with a business idea then I try to think of something for my children, either collectively or individually, that will help them reach their personal goals and objectives. When someone on my management team gets a text from me […]

The most important decision you’ll ever make, even more important than what college you go to or the career you choose, is your life partner. They can either propel your career forward or stifle you. Choose wisely and be sure that you are choosing someone that has the same goals in life that you do and sees the future the same way. Working together, especially as entrepreneurs, can be complicated but if you choose wisely, you can go further faster together!

A good interview is just a good conversation. Here are 10 amazing tips on how to have a good conversation: 1. Do not multitask (Be present in the conversation.) 2. Don’t pontificate (If you wanted to state your opinion without any opportunity for debate or growth, write a blog. Enter every conversation assuming you have something to learn.) 3. Use open-ended questions (Everyone you will ever meet knows something that you don’t. Use questions that open up the conversation.) 4. Go with the flow (Thoughts will go into your mind and you need to let them come out…pay attention to the conversation without going off on a tangent mentally.) 5. If you don’t know say you don’t know (Don’t claim to be an expert, err on the side of caution.) […]

Do not let a bad interview get in your way! Admissions interviews hold moderate to considerable importance to most colleges and universities, but are imperative to your future success post-graduation. Interviewing is a skill you will need for the rest of your life! Interviewing skills are basically just communication and interpersonal skills, which can be very important in selling and marketing yourself.

One of the more difficult decisions that Alexa had to make earlier this year was choosing between Berkeley and UCLA. The major issue was that Berkeley was offering her a scholarship, the “Generation Change Scholarship” and even doubled her scholarship after one month of their initial offer. UCLA, on the other hand, did not offer her a scholarship. From what I hear, they are more conservative with scholarships because so many people apply to their school. They receive the most applicants of any university in the country, over 110,000 annually. Nevertheless, we decide to go with UCLA for a lot of different reasons; some related to work and the opportunities that LA presented. That said, Alexa was just informed that she received the Stevens House Scholarship managed by the UCLA […]

How can I overcome my fear of public speaking? Fear of public speaking is a common form of anxiety. It can range from slight nervousness to paralyzing fear and panic. This story is one of my favorite illustrations of a self-fulfilling prophecy. As an Educator, I’m not big into “labels” and this is why… One day, as a small child, Thomas Edison came home from school and gave a paper to his mother. He said to her “Mom, my teacher gave this paper to me and told me only you are to read it. What does it say?” Her eyes welled with tears as she read the letter out loud to her child … “Your son is a genius. This school is too small for him and doesn’t have good enough teachers to train him. Please teach him yourself.” Many years after Edison’s mother had died, he became one of the greatest inventors of the century. One day he was […]

5 tips on dressing for Professional Interviews: 1. Dress in a way that is professionally appropriate to the position. This allows the interviewer to visualize you in the job. 2. You should wear a suit to interviews. If you want the job, wear a suit. 3. Your suit should be comfortable and fit you well. Consider a good suit an investment in your future. 4. Avoid loud and flashy colors. In other words, you don’t want to be upstaged by what you’re wearing. 5. You should be neat, clean, and well-groomed. After all, you are potentially representing the organization.

Due to COVID, my pre-college course was cancelled, what should I do? Answer: Do not fret, many of the Universities offering pre-college programs will have online options available to students who have been accepted into their programs. Typically, the cost is less, but be sure you are truly interested in the subject matter as you’ll be missing out on the university setting experience. That said, the actual course material and your interest level becomes especially important in terms of helping you make future goals and decisions.

Are high school internships important? They can be for a multitude of reasons. Mainly, they show Admission Counselors that you are willing to put in the extra time and effort to learn about a field that you are interested in. Most internships are unpaid at this level which shows even more commitment and sacrifice on your part to go the extra step. There’s also a secondary gain for you as an individual in terms of creating connections and learning more about what you want and don’t want career-wise.

How important are High School clubs in the College Admission process? Answer: High School clubs are as important as you make them. How you spend your time outside of the classroom does matter as it tells the Admission Counselors a lot about who you are beyond your grades. According to the Princeton Review, here are 11 tips regarding High School Clubs: Tip #1: Know your options Tip #2: Choose quality over quantity Tip #3: Understand that colleges know you can’t be everywhere all the time Tip #4: Deepen your engagement over time Tip #5: Try to gain professional experience Tip #6: Don’t try to game the college admissions process Tip #7: Consider giving back to your community Tip #8: Strengthen your time-management skills Tip #9: If you can’t find clubs […]

Q: When is a good time to start preparing for college? A: Granted pre-k is probably a bit too early, you should really have a plan in place for High School the summer before your freshman year. At that point, you should have a pretty good idea of the courses you want to take and the extracurriculars, sports, clubs etc that you want to be involved in. It’s important to show passion, dedication and commitment to a set of interests and have a theme that is clear throughout your high school career. This takes proper planning and goal setting.

Your test scores can be the deciding factor in admissions decisions as your score on the SAT, the ACT, or another college entrance exam is easier to quantify, compared to your other application materials, which can be more subjective than a standardized test. The test gives college admission counselors an objective means for comparing you to another applicant, at least on one level. Test prep helps you pull together everything you’ve studied to date and measures your ability to apply that knowledge. Additionally, your test prep gives you a chance to sharpen your skills in math, reading, and writing. This in turn gives you the tools you need to deal with math and language arts on the next level at a university.

Are summer programs really useful? Like everything else in life, you get out of it what you put into it. Summer programs are useful for a multitude of reasons… They show admissions counselors that you had the initiative to utilize your summers learning something rather than doing something else less productive They allow you to experience life on campus and explore what it would be like to be a student at that particular University, as well as a college student in general If you take courses that you are interested in, you can learn something that is important to you or you might discover that you’re not that interested after all Occasionally, the instructor may write you a letter of recommendation outlining the skills that he/she saw evident during the […]

“Why didn’t I get into my top choice school when my stats met the qualifications?” This is frequently a big question this time of year and can be extremely frustrating for many students. Oftentimes, the decision has less to do with you or your qualifications, assuming you are in the school’s range, and more to do with the mix of student profiles they are looking for to create a diverse and balanced incoming class. Diversity in student profiles for a freshman class is extremely important; SES, first-generation college graduates, legacy students, athletes, geographic region or underrepresented minorities are all factors that are considered by admission counselors to balance out their student profiles. Very often, there are more qualified applicants than spaces.

Going through the situation that we all are facing has reminded me of the unique qualities that we as Americans have in terms of our desire to work, progress, and wake up every morning with a sense of purpose. Years ago I read a book called “The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism” by Max Weber. Although he was not necessarily a proponent of capitalism, he acknowledges and chronicles the importance of Protestant ideals, such as hard work and discipline, as the basis for the formation of our capitalist society. According to him, it is the spirit of hard work and progress that formed the underpinnings of Western culture. Whether you agree with Weber or not, I think it has been made clear through our current situation that people […]

This has been one of the most important decisions that Alexa has had to make in her 17 years. Although she was accepted and given scholarships to many prestigious universities, including UC Berkeley, the George Washington University Presidential Scholarship, and the Victors Award at the University of Michigan (all were academic-based), she has decided on and committed to UCLA. I wanted to thank a few people that have helped her along the way: Amy Christopher Rowe and Wendy Vick for your constant guidance and encouragement. You both always made her feel like she could do literally anything. Natalie Baker Williams and Jordan Williams, Kelly Jones Sargeant, Heather Bassham Sumlin, Melissa Trawick-Sullivan, and JJ Smith. As you know, pageants were one of the themes on her resume and the whole purpose, […]

I wanted to introduce everybody to my new consulting business that I created, OracLe College Consulting, to help students find a pathway starting in high school to college and into their careers. Many people don’t know this, but I started my career as a College Career Counselor (that’s actually what my graduate degree is in). I spent many years guiding students in college and graduate school on career and educational choices. I went on later to helping corporate executives as a Consultant, assisting them in developing their resumes and next steps in terms of promotions and strategic career choices. I worked with Fortune 500 companies and their staff, Universities and their students, for almost a decade before “retiring,” becoming an Entrepreneur, and opening businesses, mainly medical, with my husband. Walking my […]

Because you can’t possibly apply to every school, it is important to identify schools that you are interested in, but also cover the spectrum from safety schools to mid-range schools to reach schools. Some things to consider in your research are: 1️⃣Does the school have the type of curriculum you want, e.g., open vs core curriculum? Does it have the major that you are interested in?2️⃣Will you have opportunities to study things that fascinate you, play the sports you want to play, work at internships that help clarify your career plans, and join the clubs you want to join?3️⃣Can you graduate without breaking the bank and taking on sizable amounts of student loans? Do they offer need or merit-based scholarships? Academic or Sports scholarships?4️⃣Do you like the surrounding area, e.g., […]
